Life Drawing

The Semiahmoo Recreation and Art Center will sponsor an “open” life drawing session, Friday mornings 10 am – 12:30noon,  from Sept 16th thru December 2 (12 weeks). Tony O’Regan and/or Susan Falk will organize models (draped & undraped) and room, lighting, etc. The Center will commit to sessions every Friday, if it proves viable and this would be repeated after Christmas.

The sessions are ‘informal’ in the sense that there is no formal instruction.  Participants pay $50 for 5 session parcels, which can be spread throughout the 12 weeks. Members of the Arts Council can have 6 sessions for the price of 5. There will be a subscriber/ attendee list at the door for name check-off. We may consider promoting a show at the end (at least on the internet). Payment/registration can be made at the Arts council front desk when you arrive or beforehand.

COLOR WHEEL & COLOR AS VALUE

A very useful perception to add to your mental toolkit for painting is the ability to see color as ‘value’.  The ‘lights’ create piccolo sparkle, ‘mids’ create violin richness/sublety, ‘darks’ create tuba gravitas.  Deduct the lights and you have somber/moody. Deduct the mids and you have a kind of annunciation, readable from afar, but not all that interesting up close. Deduct the darks and you have ‘ethereal’, pixies dancing at twilight. Together and they give a full orchestra – but there is still the problem of ‘dominance’ – equal amounts of piccolo, violin and tuba are boring.

July 16 2016, Arch Basics  In class discussion focused on the following:

1 – CONCEPT – Restate your concept and check that it has influence on the ‘plan’, not just the exterior ‘look’ or style.

2 –EXTERIOR SPACES –  Identify the potential for courtyards, entry points, outdoor seating and walkways resulting from the plan form, the hard and soft landscape.

3 – CIRCULATION –  Trace over your block diagram and then draw the plan to scale 1:200. Identify the circulation patterns/elements within the building.

Each person should have their plan drawn up for next class to keep the schedule. If you can also work on the section it would be valuable. We need to develop these and try to draw a 3d view in the next class.
