INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING

Welcome to Tony O’Regan’s Introductory Drawing – Summer 2020

Instructions for Participants:
The titles designate descriptions and videos numbered for each school session, numbered 1 through 8. Watch the demonstration videos (below) provided for each session. Do the assignment or exercise at the end of each session.

Second Step: Exercises – Do the exercises related to each session. These are also detailed in Moodle and Bluejeans.

Third Step: Submit a SMALL jpeg of your exercise work each week to the instructor’s email address: toregan@ecuad.ca

Fourth Step: Feedback will be emailed back to participants and may be discussed in next class session.

Final marks will be based on completion of each assignment or exercise for each session. Each assignment is marked “complete-incomplete” and may have instructor comments. If you can’t submit by the date specified, let the instructor know by email: toregan@ecuad.ca.

You can watch the videos repeatedly within a six month period. You can stream them, but not download due to copyrights. In order to continue as a member after six months, you will have to re-register as a “Free Guest Member”.

1 – Gesture & Contour

Gesture & Contour: The first two sessions will be an overview of the course, which is based on 10 Ways of Seeing and Drawing: Gesture, Contour, Mass, Space, 2D Shape, Figure-Ground, Stepped Tonality, Light-Shadow, Perspective, Composition. We will ALSO look at using various materials, such as compressed charcoal, conte, and soft pencils, to create interesting … Continue reading “1 – Gesture & Contour”

2 – Gesture & Contour Cont.

Gesture & Contour (continued) – Contour, meaning to draw the lines seen in a subject with enhanced tactile content. This is done by creating the strong belief that you are ‘touching’ the object edges with finger tips or surfaces with flats of fingers. This “intention or belief” is imprinted into the marks and then on … Continue reading “2 – Gesture & Contour Cont.”

3 – Mass and Space

3D Mass:   The 3D volumetric ‘heft’ of a Form  – this can be depicted as a ‘wireframe’ scribble but with a feeling of weight. “Section” is an important form-giver for mass. Section is like cutting across a fruit or like the ribs of a boat. All the ‘Ways of Seeing’ interact with each other to … Continue reading “3 – Mass and Space”

5 – Tonal Design Concept

2D Shape:   The positive 2D silhouette-shape is like the flat shape of a leaf or cloud or its shadow (this shape usually seems to be the subject and often has a name, like”leaf”). The negative 2D silhouette-shape is just the shape between leaves or clouds (between the main subjects and usually has no particular name). … Continue reading “5 – Tonal Design Concept”

6 – Modeling with Shade & Shadow

Session 6 – SHADE, SHADOW, REFLECTION, INK RENDERING INK TEXTURE RENDERING These videos show the Tonal Design process employed to create ink renderings of some Boats at Gunderson Slough, Fraser River. To learn about this we are using my photos. But of course we can use purpose generated value study images of our own. “Glazing” is making one … Continue reading “6 – Modeling with Shade & Shadow”

7 – Perspective (and other Geometrics)

Perspective (and other Geometrics) : In this lesson, we will apply geometric techniques for depicting DEPTH, SCALE and PROPORTION, such as Perspective (as in buildings) and Proportion (as in faces & figures). These principles help in creating the 3d spaces/forms with whatever level of accuracy desired. The three main visual cues for depth to focus … Continue reading “7 – Perspective (and other Geometrics)”

8 – Composition

Composition – This means to apply an ordering concept, a ‘design’,  to govern the elements in a picture. There are many traditional systems that have been used for this, or you may create one of your own through observation or informed intuition. This also involves an understanding of proportion, scale, format, cropping, focal point placement, … Continue reading “8 – Composition”
