GESTURE is like the miming actions one might make with the hands and arms when describing, for example, a vase of flowers or a building. We  record the major lines of force, sometimes called the ‘lines of life’, that we see in the form.  It is more obvious when we look at a dancer, a plant or a springing animal, but all things can be seen to have ‘gesture’, whether locked in like a rock or dynamically expressed in a human pose. Unless we can see, understand, and utilize the gesture in a drawing, the result will be a lifeless, mechanical depiction lacking energy.
